How do I connect to my VPS using SSH?

SSH gives you a secure command line on your server.

From Windows 10/11, macOS or Linux, open Terminal (or PowerShell on Windows) and run:

ssh root@203.0.113.10

Replace 203.0.113.10 with your VPS's IP address. The first time you connect, you will be asked to confirm the server's fingerprint. Type yes, then enter your root password. Nothing appears on screen as you type the password; this is normal.

You can also use PuTTY on Windows: enter your IP address in Host Name, keep port 22, and click Open.

Using SSH keys (recommended)

Keys are far more secure than passwords. To create a key pair and copy it to your server:

ssh-keygen -t ed25519
ssh-copy-id root@203.0.113.10

After this you can log in without a password. Keep your private key (the file without .pub) safe and never share it.

If you cannot connect, use the console in the VPS control panel instead. See My VPS is unreachable.
